Abstract

This research paper examines three projects done by the artist Kip Fulbeck, Part Asian, 100% Hapa, Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids and "15 Years of the Hapa Project". These projects deal with the subject of multiracial identity and how multiracial individuals are " othered" because White is the standard in America. Fulbeck aims to use his work to empower multiracial individuals to label themselves instead of people labeled by strangers. This paper looks at the motives behind these projects and the history of self-identification in the multiracial community and how it connects to Fulbeck's art is also explored.
