Abstract

The paper delves into the issues faced by democratic governments, while comparing them to more authoritarian alternatives, such as the ones seen in Singapore and China. Although democracies allow for superior freedoms and property rights, thereby fostering economic growth, in certain cases they are outmatched by “hybrid regimes”. These are characterized by a mix of popular government and centralized leadership but come in many forms. The advantages of such authoritarian governments include superior organization, a more efficient bureaucracy, and a faster decision-making process by the government.
