"Solidarity or Cautionary: Periodical Interpretations of Housman’s
The Were Wolf"

Major: Marketing/Graphic Design
Sophomore; Driehaus College of Business
Abstract
The concept of The New Woman came about at the end of the end of the 19th century, along with other progressive social movements anchored in uncertainty. The rise of the periodical enabled discussion and varying opinion. The New Woman was morphed and applied by feminist and popular periodicals to discuss gender roles. She is at first intelligent and autonomous, but comes to be wild, manly or overly sexual. The New Woman developed a duality through literature and press that displays the role she played during the fin-de-siècle. She was used both for conversation about women’s autonomy and expressions of fear.
