"Genevieve Erin O’Brien and Queering Mixed Race Diaspora"

Major: Health Sciences
Junior; College of Science and Health
Abstract
This paper examines how three of Genevieve Erin O’Brien’s art pieces queer the mixed-race diaspora through challenging binary of race, gender, and sexual orientation. The first piece, Nước Mắm, was an installation with dried nước mắm salt, symbolizing how layers of identity cannot be separated. The second piece, For the Love of Unicorns, was a short film that places LGBTQ+ and mixed people of color building collective power together. Lastly, More than Love on The Horizons, was a hologram installation that envisioned a Queer Vietnamese future. O’Brien’s art interrogates identity binaries, allowing her to reclaim her mixed Vietnamese queer identity.
