"Why the Electoral College is an Undemocratic Relic of the Past"

Major: Computer Science
Freshman; College of Computing and Digital Media
Abstract
The electoral college is a topic that has been hotly debated since the founding of our country. People have expressed the need for reforms, or even abolishing the whole system and
replacing it with some form of direct election. This paper will outline the reasons why the electoral college is undemocratic and argue for an alternative system of voting. To begin, the electoral college was founded in 1787 with the intention of keeping the Southern states, where the majority of their population was made of slaves, in power and to prevent people that they considered to be uneducated from voting. The electoral college also represents states disproportionately and reduces the power of minority groups. Due to its undemocratic nature, the electoral college should be replaced with instant runoff voting, which would solve the issues that the electoral college creates.
