“The Dangers of Censorship in American Education”

Major: Film and Television
Freshman; College of Computing and Digital Media
Abstract
In the American Education system, some states and schools strictly control the curriculum and materials being used in their classrooms, instituting bans and regulating which materials (such as textbooks) can be used, often without the input of teachers or educators. Censorship in education can be utilized for various reasons, but it is most often initiated by administrators or parents in order to preserve and protect certain ideologies. Even though censorship in education seems like it would protect youths from misleading or dangerous ideas, it is ineffective and harmful because it doesn’t allow students to learn from controversial topics and limits their knowledge and exposure to the world.
