"Algerian Political Islam Diminished by Negative Public Perceptions"
Majors: Applied Diplomacy and French & Arabic
Freshman; College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Abstract
The rise of Islamist political organizations is a defining socio-political development in the modern Muslim world, particularly impacting in Algeria, whose experience with political Islamist groups has come to represent the broader implications for other state’s dealings with these organizations. In this analysis, I highlight how Algerian political Islamists have seen their influence continually wane since the early 1990s and how their politically antisocial behaviors have diminished their popular support. I analyze the ways that Algerian Islamists have forsaken their once-popular political platform and have been overtaken by the more enticing religious-political platforms offered by the Algerian state.
