"Policies for Progress: Examining Food Insecurity in America’s LGBT Populations"

Major: History
Freshman; College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences
Abstract
The paper aims to identify how food insecurity plagues the LGBT community in America as a result of economic hardships, and the role non-discrimination policies play in combating this epidemic. Beginning with the Cold War, executive order documents are used to illustrate the government’s hostile attitudes against LGBT+ Americans. The paper then shifts by including case studies of LGBT individuals who face food insecurity and unemployment. Statistics reinforce how food insecurity disproportionately affects LGBT Americans, and are also incorporated to prove non-discrimination policies provides economic benefits to companies that employ members of the LGBT community while benefiting the LGBT community.
