Abstract

Début-de-Siècle is a creative project featuring a 6-page essay and a painting depicting the Shakespearean Ophelia in an environment clad in climate change effects, ultimately comparing the fin-de-siècle’s artistic movements to contemporary times. Using the lenses of Decadence, ecofeminism, and the New Woman, Début-de-Siècle is an exploration of today’s looming apocalyptic sentiments, grounded in a criticism of our complacency. Research for the project features primary sources such as an account from Oscar Wilde and secondary sources such as a French academic journal covering the Pre-Raphaelite impact on Ophelia’s symbolism. The painting is acrylic, candle wax, and ash on a canvas.
